Reconciliation Statement
ZAZU.com.au formally acknowledges the Dharawal and Gandangara peoples as the First Nations custodians of the land now known as the Sutherland Shire, New South Wales.
For thousands of years prior to European arrival, these peoples lived in this region, caring for Country and maintaining a deep spiritual and cultural connection to its lands and waters. Evidence of this enduring connection persists throughout the area — in rock engravings, shell middens, and other sacred sites found across the Shire, its National Parks, waterways, and private land.
A Place of Significance
Kurnell holds particular significance in Australian history as the site of the first recorded contact between Aboriginal people and English colonisers — a moment that forever changed the lives of the Dharawal and Gandangara peoples, and the course of this nation.
Acknowledging the Harm of Colonisation
ZAZU.com.au acknowledges that European settlement caused profound and lasting harm — alienating Aboriginal peoples from traditional lands that for countless generations had provided food, clothing, shelter, and deep spiritual meaning. We recognise that these lands remain culturally significant and that the impacts of colonisation are ongoing.
We offer our sincere sorrow for the harm caused by European settlement and commit to honouring the truth of that history.
